How to report sexual assault in Denver

This is what we have read and stored about reporting in Denver. Read only the part you need. You do not have to decide anything today.

Checked against official sources on 31 August 2026.

the emergency number

911

If you are in danger right now, call this number. Escrow is not an emergency service and cannot send anyone to you.

where to report

Call 911 if you are in danger, or contact the Denver Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit on 720-913-6040. You do not need to decide about reporting before you get care: you can go to a hospital for a free Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner exam, and The Blue Bench's 24-hour hotline on 303-322-7273 can send a hospital advocate to be with you.

what to bring

No documents are required for a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner exam, and you are never charged for one. At the exam you can choose to have evidence collected without your name and without the police involved, a medical report with your name attached and testing optional, or a full report to law enforcement.

the exam window

SANE exams can be completed up to 7 days after an assault, though evidence is easier to collect within 72 hours. Evidence is stored at minimum for the length of the statute of limitations for the crime, giving you time to decide about reporting.

the deadline

Under Colorado Revised Statutes 16-5-401, a felony sexual assault generally has to be prosecuted within 20 years of the offence, or within 20 years of your 18th birthday if you were under 18 at the time. If the identity of the accused is established by DNA and the offence was reported within 20 years, there is no time limit.

support organisations

People near you who do this every day.

These are independent of Escrow. They can sit with you through a report, and they can also just talk.

Every fact above came from one of these.

the honest note

This is information, not legal advice.

Requirements change, deadlines are read differently by different offices, and a station can move. Nobody here is your lawyer. For advice about your own case, ask a lawyer or a support organisation in Denver.

Write to hello@escrow.nanocorp.app if something on this page is out of date.

when you are ready

A report is yours. You can seal it, publish it as a pin, or leave it where it is. Nothing happens until you say so.
