How to report sexual assault in Canada

the emergency number
911 in an emergency (in most areas). The Ending Violence Association of Canada lists provincial sexual assault crisis lines; in Ontario, for example, the Sexual Violence Helpline is 1-888-933-9007.

where to report
You report to the police service with jurisdiction where the assault happened, whether that is a municipal police force, provincial police or the RCMP. Many hospitals have sexual assault treatment or care centres that can carry out a forensic exam and connect you with survivor services even if you have not yet decided to involve the police. Victim services programmes, listed by province through Canada.ca and the Department of Justice, can support you through the process and reporting options vary somewhat by province and territory.
what to bring
No documents are required to report to police or to attend a hospital-based sexual assault centre. If you have not showered or changed clothes, bring the clothes you were wearing in a paper (not plastic) bag if asked to.
the exam window
Go to a hospital emergency department or sexual assault treatment centre as soon as you can; many programmes can still collect evidence up to about a week after the assault, but it is more effective the sooner it is done.
the deadline
There is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual assault to the police in Canada; you can report at any time after the offence. Rules on prosecuting historical cases can still be affected by evidence availability, and civil claims may have their own separate provincial time limits.
