How to report sexual assault in Toronto

the emergency number
Call 911 for police or medical emergencies. Call the Assaulted Women's Helpline at 1-866-863-0511 (24/7, multilingual) for crisis counselling and referrals.

where to report
Go to a Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Care Centre (SA/DVCC), such as the one at Women's College Hospital, which offers 24/7 nursing care, forensic exams and the option to report to police, with or without you deciding to press charges right away. To report directly to police, call Toronto Police Service at 416-808-2222 or visit any division; you can also report anonymously or through a third party such as a victim services worker if you are not ready to speak to police yourself.
what to bring
You do not need any documents to make a report. Toronto Police and the SA/DVCC will take your report and can help you obtain ID or other paperwork later if needed.
the exam window
Go to a Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Care Centre, such as the one at Women's College Hospital (416-323-6040, open 24/7), where a specially trained nurse can provide care, a forensic exam, and evidence collection, whether or not you have decided to report to police. HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is most effective when started within 72 hours of the assault, and emergency contraception is available and works within 120 hours, so try to go as soon as you can, though care is still offered afterward.
the deadline
There is no time limit. Under Canadian law there is no statute of limitations for reporting sexual assault to police; you can report an assault to Toronto Police or the RCMP at any point, even many years later.
