How to report sexual assault in Egypt

This is what we have read and stored about reporting in Egypt. Read only the part you need. You do not have to decide anything today.

This is the country-wide answer for Egypt. Some of it changes from region to region and city to city, so read your city below if it is there.

Some of this comes from support organisations, published research or consular guidance rather than an official source in Egypt. Sources are listed below.

the emergency number

Dial 122 for the police in Egypt. 112 also reaches the emergency services from a mobile phone.

If you are in danger right now, call this number. Escrow is not an emergency service and cannot send anyone to you.

where to report

You can go to any police station or call the police to report the assault. The National Council for Women runs a Complaints Office hotline, 15115, offering legal, social, and psychological advice, with branches in every governorate, according to Egyptian media reporting on the council.

what to bring

No document is required to file a police report. You will be asked to describe the assailant, and where and when the incident took place. Bring identification if you have it, and try to preserve items such as clothing, texts, or messages that may hold evidence.

the exam window

A forensic doctor appointed by the prosecutor carries out the exam at a government hospital, and it is free if ordered by police. According to UK government guidance, the usual forensic time window is about 2 days for oral or digital penetration, 3 days for anal penetration, and up to 7 days for vaginal penetration, though examining sooner strengthens the evidence.

the deadline

There is no deadline for filing the report, according to UK government guidance, though reporting sooner helps preserve evidence. No official Egyptian source sets out a fixed limitation period for prosecuting rape, so treat that point as unconfirmed.

the honest note

This is information, not legal advice.

Requirements change, deadlines are read differently by different offices, and a station can move. Nobody here is your lawyer. For advice about your own case, ask a lawyer or a support organisation in Egypt.

when you are ready

A report is yours. You can seal it, publish it as a pin, or leave it where it is. Nothing happens until you say so.
