How to report sexual assault in Colombia

This is what we have read and stored about reporting in Colombia. Read only the part you need. You do not have to decide anything today.

This is the country-wide answer for Colombia. Some of it changes from region to region and city to city, so read your city below if it is there.

Checked against official sources on 30 August 2026.

the emergency number

Call 123 for police, fire or medical emergencies. Línea 155 offers free, national orientation for women survivors of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, 24 hours a day.

If you are in danger right now, call this number. Escrow is not an emergency service and cannot send anyone to you.

where to report

You can report to the Policía Nacional or the Fiscalía General de la Nación in person, or file a report online through the Sistema Nacional de Denuncia Virtual. You can also seek support and orientation at a Casa de Justicia.

what to bring

The Policía Nacional states that filing a denuncia is free and does not require a lawyer. No particular documents are required, though identification can help the process.

the exam window

The Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses guidance covers the forensic sexological examination in the first 72 hours after the assault. The exam is carried out by forensic doctors at Medicina Legal or at a health institution.

the deadline

Under Law 2081 of 2021, the criminal action for sexual offences committed against people under 18 has no statute of limitations. For adults, the criminal action prescribes after a period tied to the maximum penalty, never less than 5 years nor more than 20 years.

support organisations

People near you who do this every day.

These are independent of Escrow. They can sit with you through a report, and they can also just talk.

the honest note

This is information, not legal advice.

Requirements change, deadlines are read differently by different offices, and a station can move. Nobody here is your lawyer. For advice about your own case, ask a lawyer or a support organisation in Colombia.

when you are ready

A report is yours. You can seal it, publish it as a pin, or leave it where it is. Nothing happens until you say so.
