where to report
Call 111 if it has just happened and you are in danger. You can report a rape or sexual assault to New Zealand Police at any time, whether it happened weeks, months or years ago, by visiting your nearest station, calling 105, or reporting online at 105.police.govt.nz. If you want to talk through your options first, Safe to Talk (0800 044 334, free and 24/7) can explain what to expect and connect you to local support.
what to bring
No documents or referral are needed to contact Safe to Talk, or to be seen by a specialist sexual assault medical service. That care is free of charge, whether or not you report to the police.
the exam window
For a recent assault, evidence can be collected from your clothing and body up to a week afterwards, and in some cases longer, according to Safe to Talk. You can ask for the evidence to be stored while you decide whether to make a formal report.
the deadline
New Zealand Police say you can report a rape or sexual assault at any time, whether it happened weeks, months or years ago. There is no reporting deadline.
