How to report sexual assault in Lagos

the emergency number
Call 112 (national emergency number) or 767 (Lagos emergency line) from a Nigerian phone. The Mirabel Centre can also be reached directly at 0815 577 0000, 0818 724 3468 or 0701 349 1769.

where to report
Go to any police station and ask for the Family Support Unit (FSU), a Lagos-wide unit of officers trained to handle rape and sexual and gender-based violence cases, or the Gender Unit within the State Criminal Investigation Department. You can also go straight to the Mirabel Centre, Nigeria's first Sexual Assault Referral Centre, located within Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH); Mirabel staff can help you make a police report and will coordinate directly with the FSU on your behalf.
what to bring
No documents are required to make a report. You do not need a lawyer to report, and Mirabel Centre and government hospitals in Lagos provide medical examination, counselling and legal support at no cost, funded by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).
the exam window
Ask the police or go directly to a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) such as the Mirabel Centre, or another government hospital, for a forensic medical examination; you do not need a police report first to be examined. Try to avoid washing, changing clothes or brushing your teeth beforehand so evidence is preserved. Emergency contraception and HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) both need to be started within 72 hours of the assault to be effective.
the deadline
There is no fixed waiting period before you can report to the police, and doing so quickly helps preserve evidence. Nigeria's federal Criminal Code has historically placed a short time limit on prosecuting some sexual offences, and lawmakers have been moving to remove that limit; because the rules differ by law and are changing, ask the Mirabel Centre or a lawyer about the current deadline for your specific case rather than relying on a fixed number.
